I survived!

PHEW!  I survived the first two days of school.  It was so much fun to see the kiddos again and see how much they have grown, get to know some new friends, and review routines.  Luckily, I can just jump right back into learning since I had most of my friends last year.  They are such an awesome group, and so welcoming to our new friends too!  I am so lucky to work with these kids and their families.  :)

So here is something new-ish in my room:

No, the slightly rusty storage cabinets are not new, but the super cute polka-dotted covering are!  Check this out-- I bought a roll of wrapping paper (yep, from the dollar store for a buck each!), laminated the ENTIRE ROLL, cut it out, cut each roll in half width wise, and added mega-strong magnets to the backside.  VIOLA~ instant adorable cabinet make-over!  And the cool part is #1-- it only cost $2 to cover BOTH cabinets; and #2-- if I don;t like it, I can easily change it; and finally-- I can write on them or still use magnets through the thin laminated paper.  WOOHOOO!

Thanks for stopping by!  Happy Teaching!

Visual Reminders for Sound Level in the Room

Ok, so I am looping to 3rd grade with my munchkins, and I DEFINITELY noticed some things that I need to do for them this year, such as a visual reminder about the noise level when working in centers or independently.  I created this little lovely the other night while messing around on the computer.  I was inspired by some other ones I saw on, where else-- Pinterest!  :)

You can get your own pieces for printing and assembling your own Sound Check Board here.  As a way to save ink, I printed the B&W images on coordinating scrapbook paper.

Where Have You Been?

Good question!  Where have I been?   I think I jumped in with two feet and realized it was a bit much to be blogging, in addition to all the other stuff I as doing too.  So anyways, I am ready to try it again.  :)

I am working on posting some things on TpT, so please take a moment to browse my offerings (free and paid) and let me know what you think.  I'm a big girl, I can take constructive criticism.

It's TIME!

So, a social studies standard for my kiddos is to put events in order on a timeline.  We have had some practice with that because of our Weekly Reader, but my learners stull struggle with it at times.  So to make it fun, I created on based upon the holidays of the year.  Every kid knows the holidays of the year, and with the 2012 is right around the corner, what better time than now to practice time lines!

First up, here is a timeline activity I found at Teachervision.  This is also cool to help with telling time!

Here's the link to my holiday timeline, but please know I am having problems getting the Independence Day picture to show up on the pdf version, so I only have 5 events on this worksheet.  If you want the page with 6 events, just email me and I will send you the Word Doc.

Thanks for stopping by and have a GREAT week!

Can you believe it!?!?!  This is our last full week of school before Thanksgiving Break.  We might be on the countdown to break, but this is a busy week for me-- conferneces 2 nights this week, hubby has meeting late on night,... phew!  Maybe by Friday we will be able to sit down to a family meal, but in the mean time, here are some Thanksgiving graphing activities.  I usually teach a mini-lesson as a while group activitiy before dismissing students for independent practice and centers while I pull guided math groups.  Please note, this packet is meant to be used over several days.  In fact, my plan is to focus on one type of graph each day.  We will make a graph together in class, they will practice on the worksheet with the given data, then the following day students will collect their own data to make a graph.

I truly believe it is an honor to live and teach in the United States, and we need to thank our veterans and active military member for allowing us to have the greatest jobs in the world-- working with students.

Veteran's Day was formally known as Armistice Day.  After reading several non-fiction books about Veteran's Day, I asked my students to complete this timeline.  They really did love learning this week, and I am so fortunate to have families with veterans who are eager to talk to the students, share experiences, and answer hundreds of little second grade questions!
